After his parents and 70 family members were murdered by Saddam Hussein’s regime, Basti Samad was raised an orphan in a hospital in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq. He was still in high school when he joined the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a group founded by Iraq’s current president, Jalal Talabani.
